Day 10: Fruit Market

This was one outing we had been looking forward to.  It was a true Colombian experience!  We really enjoyed it.  It was like a farmer's market on steroids.  When we first stepped in, there was someone there slicing fresh fruit and offering samples.  We tasted quite a few new, tropical fruits that we loved (and a few we didn't).  One of our favorites was the anona.  Highly recommend it!  Below, Philip is chowing down on a sapote, which was also delicious.  We had some fruits that really reminded us of muscadines as well.

Luisa tried quite a few of the fruits, and enjoyed about half of them.  Unfortunately, our four year old has a very underdeveloped palate.  The only thing she tried was a banana.  And a granola bar I had in my bag.  Made this fruit-loving momma so sad.  Actually, it was good that she ate little, because she proceeded to throw everything up in the middle of the market a bit later.  Don't worry, I caught most of it in my cupped hands.  Oh, what a glorious jobs we moms of littles have.  :)  She was pasty-looking the rest of the outing, but kept everything else inside.

So many varieties of avocado!

Above are chontaduros.  They are a popular snack particular to Cali.  They are boiled and served with either salt or honey (or both).  I had the salted variety, and it was oh-so-delicious.  I kept saying it reminded me of something from home, and Philip was able to place it: boiled peanuts.  I was told that the 2nd level of the mall near our hotel sells chontaduros.  I will be going to get some for sure!

Meat market was there as well

Caroline was most looking forward to the flower market there.  She wanted to pick out a pink or purple one, and she found the perfect rose.  This perked her up a bit.

After the market, we went across to a souvenir shop.  It was our first experience with cheaper Colombian merchandise (the mall is mucho pricey).  We had a ball picking out things for us, for the girls, and for friends and family at home. We want to keep Luisa's birth culture present in our family, so we picked out some things to have in her room and in our home.  Caroline found itty bitty, tiny figurines, which are her favorite toys on earth.  She got a puppy and a penguin about a centimeter high each.

We headed home after that to feed Luisa (Philip and I were full of fruit, and Caroline was still not feeling well), and then we all four took a nap again.  Luisa was inexplicably awake from 2:00 until 3:30 this morning, so we were worn out after disrupted sleep and a busy day out.  Caroline vomited once more right as I was putting dinner on the table.  We are hoping that it is just the new food and excitement and not a virus.

Tomorrow we will attempt to go to a park if we are all four well.
